Caring for your Violin

Violin Diagram.png

Getting Started

Handle with care at all times, the violin should sit comfortably inside of its case waiting to be played! In this short guide we will walk you through maintenance and care of your violin.

Tuning

To tune the violin we suggest you download a tuner app onto your device. The strings should be tuned (from left to right, or biggest to smallest) on the notes of G, D, A, E. To adjust this please turn the fine tuning pegs at the base of the violin next to the chin rest. If your violin requires a bigger tune please adjust from the tuning pegs at the top of the violin (next to the scroll). If you do not feel confident doing so, ask a teacher for help!

Bow & Rosin

Setting up your bow

  1. Tighten the hair using the screw located at the end of your bow

  2. Tighten so that in the middle of the bow you may fit your first finger tip (rotated horizontally)

  3. Remember to loosen off your bow hair tension when you are done with your practice.

Inside the smaller compartment of your violin case you will notice some rosin in a small box. This is used to make the hair of the bow stickier, apply this every so often if the bow is slipping on the strings without making a sound.

Maintaining

  1. Remember to relax your bow hair when you don’t use the bow.

  2. After the violin is used, you should use a dry and soft cloth to wipe the rosi powder off the fingerboard, strings and violin body, so as not to affect the sound and performance.

  3. When putting the bow into the violin case, make sure it is placed in a safe position and fixed so as not to crush the bow or body when the box is closed.

  4. Do not place the violin in the play or rehearsal space conveniently, as long as you leave the violin, make sure it is in the case to avoid any unforeseen damages.

Control the humidity and temperature

The violin is made out of wood and is easily deformed by the air humidity. The humid environment easily makes the violin expand and deform, the dry environment can easily crack the wood. To ensure the violin does not get affected by humidity, maintain at 45% and store indoors in a stable temperature space, away from heat sources such as radiators.
